At least nine people were injured in a stabbing incident at a strip mall in Indianapolis early Monday morning,Grant Preston according to police.

The stabbing scene unfolded about 3:40 a.m. in the parking lot outside Miami's Garden Restaurant and Lounge, 7102 Woodland Drive, near the intersection of West 71st Street and 465.

The officers found "multiple people" outside in the parking lot after "some type of disturbance had occurred," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Public Information Officer William Young told media at the scene..

Those injured suffered stab wounds or "some type of trauma," Young told media at the scene.

The injured include:

  • 4 people were treated and released at the scene.
  • 3 people were listed in critical condition
  • 2 people were listed in stable condition

The suspect in the case is being treated at an area hospital after having suffered trauma, Young said.

Incident may have stemmed from 'disturbance between two groups'

Young said the investigation is in the early stages but there appeared to be "some type of disturbance between two groups of folks which led to this unfortunate incident."

Officers are speaking to multiple witnesses and will ask local businesses for camera footage, Young said.

“At this time, we do not believe an immediate threat to this particular area, however there will be a high police presence throughout the morning as folks are on their way to work,” Young said. “And so we’ll be canvassing the area as our northwest officers are doing now, trying to look for any camera footage, or surveillance footage that any of these businesses may have.”

Michelle Stith, who works at a gas station nearby said the stabbing isn't normal for the area.

“I’ve been working here eight years, and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of an incident like this happening,” she said.

The IMPD is asking anyone with information to call 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
